A CAD file is a digital drawing used in design and engineering software. The file contains technical information about the dimensions, geometry and sometimes materials of the product. It is used by designers, planners and installers to place the product in drawings and models.

Common file formats include STEP, DWG, DXF and IFC. The format affects how the information can be used in different programs.

The choice of format depends on which program the file will be used in.

If the product is to be imported into a CAD or BIM program, you should check which file format the program supports. Consult with the responsible designer or installer if you are unsure. You can also contact us for guidance.

In some cases, CAD files are delivered as a compressed zip file. This means that several files are combined into one and need to be unzipped before use.

Unzip zip file on Windows

  1. Right-click on the zip file.
  2. Select Extract all.
  3. Follow the instructions and choose where to save the files.
  4. The unzipped files will end up in a regular folder that you can then open.

Unzip zip file on Mac

  1. Double-click the zip file.
  2. The files are automatically unzipped into the same folder.
  3. The new folder is created with the same name as the zip file.

Tips

  • If the file still won't open: check that you have the correct program for the file format (e.g. STEP/DWG/DXF/IFC).
  • If you want, email us and we can help you troubleshoot: contact@bengtssons-maskin.se.
